My adventure across this remarkable island chain began at Fort St. Catherine, following much of the famous Bermuda Railroad Trail.
Bermuda consists of about 180 small islands and islets, though only about 20 are inhabited, connected by bridges and causeways that made my cross-island trek possible. The trail follows the route of the old Bermuda Railway, which operated from 1931 to 1948 before being dismantled and sold to British Guiana. As I walked the converted railway path, I was struck by Bermuda’s diverse landscapes – from pristine beaches and dramatic cliff faces to lush vegetation and charming pastel-colored houses.
The journey took me through bustling Hamilton, past hidden coves where turquoise water seemed almost artificial in its perfection, and along quiet stretches where only waves crashed against pink sand beaches. The trail’s gentle gradients and scenic rest stops made the trek manageable, with frequent opportunities to pause and take in breathtaking Atlantic vistas.
